A New Year means a year full of possibilities. This year I have so many exciting things planned including my wedding (eek!), multiple vacations, including two international trips, a month at Disney in the summer and so much more. This past week, I have been getting organized and prepared for the year ahead. Check out some things I've found that help me.
The first thing to do is take down your Christmas decor. I have a three piece artificial tree and I never knew how to store it. I saw this storage bin at The Container Store that said it could store a collapsed 7ft tree. I was skeptical and didn't want to pay $35 so I decided to pass. Then I saw it on sale at Target and decided to commit. I was pleasantly surprised that my entire 7ft tree fit in the bin with extra room for additional decor.
The most obvious organizational necessity is a planner. I know many people that like to keep all their appointments and meetings on their iPhone but I prefer to write everything down, I think it helps me better remember. I love this Planner Folio by May Designs at Target. I like to keep notes and stickers in the front pocket for easy access. The planner has a weekly layout with a section for "To-Do" and "Errands" that I love. I keep all of my dates and plans color coded for easy organization.
I have been wanting to try packing cubes for a while and was so excited when I got these as a gift for Christmas. I was traveling to Wilmington for New Years so I got to try them out. I will never travel without them ever again. I kept all of my pants, jeans and skirts in one cube. Dresses in one and tops and sweaters in another. I always knew where to find what I was looking for during my stay. I have a question for those that use packing cubes already, after you wear something, do you put it in a dirty clothes bag or put it back in the original packing cube? This girl needs answers!
I have always stored my shoes in their original shoe boxes and I've liked it to protect them but they don't always stack up well and sometimes I forget what shoe is in what box. I found these shoe boxes from The Container Store. They're clear so you can see what shoe you're looking for and since they're are all the same bin they stack really easily. Heels and wedges get stored in their own bins. I can usually fit two pairs of flats in one and I can fit multiple pairs of sandals in one too. I put all of my slides in one bin and all of my Jack Rogers in another. Sneakers are the only thing I didn't box up because I reach for them everyday.
I recently watched "Master the Mess" on Directv and fell in love with The Home Edit even more than I already was. Their organizational projects are serious goals. I decided to tackle my bathing room storage. I have cans, bottles and jars galore under my sink and was always digging for what I needed. I looked at the bathroom bins while I was at The Container Store but they were so expensive because they were made exclusively for bathroom storage. I decided to venture back to the shoe storage and grabbed 4 of the "Tall Shoe Box" to organize my products. I sorted through everything and organized them in their appropriate bins. Since they stack so well I was able to use more vertical space which meant I had so much more space for anything else. My four bins are Hair, Body, Face and Nails.
This really isn't an organizational product but it has been a huge game changer. For those longer haired girls out there, cleaning the hair out of your drain or using Drano one a month is such a pain. I used to go through more bottles of Drano than shampoo. I saw this handy tool the other day and had to try it. OMG! My life is changed! It collects all your hair and then at the end of the week you just grab a tissue to take out the collected hair and throw it away. Piece of cake! If you use Drano like it's your job, give this little guy a try.
